According to the latest report from the Niti Aayog, it has come to be known that the number of downloads of Aadhar card on the UIDAI website has crossed 40 crores. This means that on an average 6 lakh downloads are done per day. In order to apply for Aadhar card, a resident must produce a valid proof of identity and a proof of address document at the Enrolment Centre. The UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has listed down documents that are considered as valid for identity and address proof for Aadhar card. There arises a common question about the Bank passbook that can be produced as Aadhar card address proof.

USING BANK PASSBOOK AS AADHAR CARD ADDRESS PROOF

Recently it was in the news that Aadhar Card holders have grown to 1 billion and of them the users of eAadhar are over 40 Crores. Let us first understand a few reasons behind this.

The Niti Aayog has cited the following reasons for the growing popularity of Aadhar card downloads:

  • Many service providers have started accepting Aadhar number as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address.
  • User-friendliness of UIDAI website, where residents can easily download their Aadhar card.

Among the documents to establish the Address proof of a person, the UIDAI has mentioned that bank passbook/statement can be produced as an Aadhar card address proof at the time of enrolment.

As per the existing provisions, Passbook/Statement of active bank account of Public Sector Banks is accepted as one of the valid documents for Proof of Address for submitting an Aadhar Card application.

MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS’ APPROVAL FOR THE SAME

The Ministry of External Affairs has been receiving references from various levels seeking clarity and requests to list the name of banks whose passbook/statement is acceptable as proof of address.

aadhar-card-address-proof-oneAlso the Ministry has been encountering references for inclusion of photo passbooks issued by the Scheduled Private Indian Banks as well as Regional Rural Banks in addition to Scheduled Public Sector Banks.

After examining this issue carefully, it has been decided that henceforth, photo passbooks of the following categories of banks authorized by the Reserve Bank of India can be accepted as Proof of Address and photo identity:

  1. Scheduled Public Sector Banks
  2. Scheduled Private Sector Indian Banks
  3. Regional Rural Banks
