What does the term ‘Aadhar ‘Mean?

The meaning of the term Aadhar, is “foundation” in many Indian languages. Aadhar is therefore the term used for the unique identity number issued by the UIDAI (The Unique Identification Authority of India).

The number is linked to an individual’s biometrics thus further adding to the uniqueness of the programme. Also, no citizen can have a duplicate number. The government can therefore easily eliminate the duplicate and fake identities through the Aadhar- based biometric identification system which will enable it to expand benefits to other eligible residents.

Is there any regulatory body for the Aadhar? If yes then which one?

Yes, there is a regulatory body for Aadhar. The name of the regulatory body is The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the government of India.

Who is eligible to enroll for the Aadhar?

Any resident of India including infants can enrol for the Aadhar. In addition to this, NRIs and foreign citizens residing in India can also enrol for the Aadhar.

Can we call the Aadhar a smart card?

The answer is no, the Aadhar is a unique identification number and is not a smart card. Infact you don’t even need the actual Aadhar card as a simple eAadhar card printed on a plain piece of paper is also a valid ID and address proof. Smart card not even necessary to have.

Is getting an Aadhar card compulsory?

No, it is not compulsory to get an Aadhar however, with the passage of time, more and more services are being linked by the government with Aadhar. For instance, LPG subsidies and Bank Account Portability has been linked with the Aadhar and to avail such benefits, getting an Aadhar is compulsory.

I wish to obtain an Aadhar, what is the information that I will have to provide?

For each individual opting for the Aadhar, Demographic and Biometric information is required:

How can the Date of Birth of a person be validated?

There is a backend process maintained in Aadhar database to indicate if Date of Birth (DoB) is verified, declared, or approximate as per the DDSVP Committee report.

However, in case exact DoB is not known, the resident is asked to indicate his/her age only because the enrollment software has the provision to capture age & calculate the year of birth. Hence, the exact DOB might not be known to validate the birth date of a person.

Can introducers be added or removed at a later stage by the registrar?

Yes, it is possible for registrars to add/ modify/ remove introducers at a later stage.

Not only this, even the area of operations of an introducer can be modified at a later stage. The Unique Identification Authority of India encourages the registrars to review performance of introducers on an on-going basis and also to make changes to the list as and when required.

How many days will it take to process the Aadhar Enrollment form?

It usually takes around a month to process the Aadhar enrollment form. You can check the Aadhar enrolment status by visiting https://resident.uidai.gov.in/check-aadhaar-status

Your eAadhar maybe ready in a month’s time, however for the physical copy to reach you, it will take a period of around 2- 3 months. In case your Aadhar enrolment form isn’t processed for a long time, check the Aadhar status via above online portal.

How much time does it usually take to update Aadhar Enrollment ID online?

It normally takes around 15 days to update the Aadhar enrollment ID Online but there might be exceptions and chances are that your Aadhar enrollment ID arrives late. Hence, in case your enrollment ID has been under process for a long time, you can call 1947 for further information.

How can I update my Aadhar card at Aadhar enrollment centre?

Your Aadhar card can be updated by visiting the nearest Aadhar enrollment centre in your area. Once you reach the enrollment centre, you will be asked your Aadhar and mobile number after which you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number with the UIDAI.

I have lost my registered mobile number, how do I get my Aadhar?

I have lost my Aadhar card as well as my enrollment slip. What would you suggest I do?

Getting the Aadhar card online without the enrollment details and Aadhar number isn’t possible.

You will need to visit the nearest Aadhar centre for the details. It is advised to carry one of your ID proofs as well. If the Aadhar centre is an authorized one, the charges would be nominal. Use the UIDAI portal to help you locate the Aadhar centre nearest to the area you live in.

Can the enrollment slip of the Aadhar card be used as an ID proof at the airport?

No, you cannot use the enrollment slip of the Aadhar as an Identity proof. You must have the physical Aadhar or download and print the eAadhar card to use it as an ID proof.

I have lost my enrollment slip as well as the registered mobile number. How to download the Aadhar card if I lost enrollment slip and registered mobile number?

If you’ve lost your registered mobile number as well as the Aadhar enrollment slip, there are two ways available to you in order to download the Aadhar:

What is the Password for opening my online Aadhar card or the eAadhar PDF?

This password is the pin code of the area you’re living in. For example, if you live in New Delhi, Rohini sector 13, your pin code is 110085. This is mainly the postal code you entered while getting enrolled for Aadhar, i.e. your residence postal code.

Can I download the Aadhar without providing my name?

The answer is No, you cannot download the Aadhar card without providing your name. Name is a mandatory field that must be filled in order to obtain the Aadhar card.

What to do if the UIDAI website says that the Aadhar has been generated, but I still have not received it? I only have the EID slip.

Ensure that the Enrollment slip or enrollment ID, date, time and mobile number are in place. In such a case, you can easily download an electronic Aadhar which will be as useful as the hardcopy of the Aadhar.

There is absolutely no need to panic in case you have lost or damaged your Aadhar card as due to the advanced technology, an e- Aadhar can be easily downloaded.

How to download the eAadhar if the site says “registered mobile number not valid” and the Aadhar acknowledgment slip isn’t available?

Ideally, for downloading eAadhar you must have the access to the registered mobile no. However, if you do not have the registered mobile number, there is a solution available. All you need to do is follow the simple steps mentioned below:

Go to UIDAI official website which is http://appointments.uidai.gov.in/easearch.aspx
Click on the option and select your state, district, town to access a list of UIDAI official agents with their address and phone number.
Visit the centre to get your mobile number will be registered in the Aadhar database.
Do carry your valid ID proof and address proof for verification purposes.
I have applied for an Aadhar but not received, what shall I do?

It takes a period of 90 days for your Aadhar to reach you. This 90 day period exists because during these 90 days, certain processes like data authentication, information processing etc. are carried out. Hence, you must wait for at least 90 days before taking any action.

Are there any charges applicable for changing/updating Aadhar details at enrollment centre/offline? I have been asked to pay Rs.200 to do the same.

Yes, there might be some nominal charges incurred to get the Aadhar updated/ changed.

However Rs. 200 is a huge amount. The charges incurred are nominal such as Rs. 30/- if done from an authorized Aadhar centre. Also, you will not have to pay a single penny if you get your Aadhar updated online, through the government portal.

I wish to change the mobile number enrolled in Aadhar. How is this possible?

You can easily change the mobile number enrolled in Aadhar via two methods:

By updating the mobile number in Aadhar through an online process
By updating Aadhar card with mobile number by visiting the Aadhar card centre or via post.

What does ‘Aadhar update status is in process’ mean?

This simply means that your request for Aadhar card update has been verified and approved and will be administered soon.



The URN given to me to check Aadhar update status is incorrect. Is there any other way available to check the Aadhar update status?

Yes the alternative method is described as follows:

Visit the official website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)
Select the Download Aadhar option under the Enroll and get Aadhar section.
After that, click on the “I have an Aadhar” option.
You will be asked some details, enter them and wait for the OTP to be sent on your registered mobile number.
Enter the OTP and click on Validate and Download.

You will now find that the details that you wished to update have already been updated in the system and the updated Aadhar will now be available for download.
If not – this means that the request is in process.


I have received 7 update request numbers (URNs) for Aadhar updating via post. Why did this happen and what should I do?

This must have happen if you have placed multiple Aadhar update requests.

All you need to do now is to check if the corrections have been made and the Aadhar has been updated or not. If your Aadhar is updated, you no longer need to worry about the URNs.



What to do in case my Aadhar update request has been rejected twice due to error in data processing?

All the Aadhar card data taken at the time of enrollment is later sent to UIDAI for approval via internet. Hence, sometimes, due to poor internet connection or network error it is possible that the data failed to upload. This results in the data processing error.

No need to panic if such thing happens. All you need to do is carry your enrollment receipt to the nearest Aadhar centre and ask them to re- enroll.

How much time does it take for the Aadhar card to get updated and reach the applicant?

Can my parent’s Aadhar card be used to update my address in my State Bank of India passbook?

The answer is no. You cannot use your parent’s Aadhar to update your current address. What you can do in this case it to submit an undertaking to the branch manager that since you are staying with your father, your current address needs to be updated. However, a proof must be provided to the bank in order to show that you have applied for a change in address in your other IDs such as voter ID card. Also, the ID with the changed address needs to be submitted. At the end, everything depends upon the discretion of the bank.



Is the coloured printout of my updated Aadhar card a valid identity or address proof?

Yes, the coloured printout of the Aadhar is as valid as the original one. This is a printed form of the Aadhar details on plain sheet of paper or a photo paper or a plastic sheet that are considered to be equal to the original copy of the Aadhar.

Which language must be used while updating the Aadhar?

Ideally, the language to be used while Aadhar card update is English and any other local language which has been saved at the time of Aadhar enrollment will be appropriate.



How much time will it take to update the Aadhar details if applied through post?

No, enrollment for the Aadhar is free of cost and no money should be charged.

The term “Aadhar holder” is used for an individual who has an Aadhar card registered in his name.



What is the Aadhar Number?

Aadhar Number is the unique identification number which is issued to every resident of India by the Unique Identification Authority of India.



What is the meaning of Aadhar Enabled Services?

The Aadhar enabled services refer to the various services provided by an Authentication user agency to an Aadhar card holder using the Aadhar Authentication Services of UIDAI.



What do you mean by the Aadhar Authentication Services?

These are the authentication services that are provided by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and are used by the Authentication User Agency where the personal identity information or the data of an Aadhar card holder (who is a beneficiary, customer, employee or associate of the Authentication User Agency) is matched with their personal identity information / data that is stored in the UIDAI’s Central Identity Data Repository.

The Aadhar self service update portal, or the SSUP is the portal launched by UIDAI to help you update your Aadhar related data and get the relevant online as well as offline forms to do so.

Is it possible to request for updating fields by sending a request via post?

Yes, in order to change your name, gender, DOB, address or email, you can send a request to the UIDAI through post. The addresses are:

What should I do in case my mobile number has not yet been registered with the Aadhar? I wish to get my mobile number updated.

All you need to do is simply visit the Aadhar enrollment centre nearest to the area you live in.

You will not require any type of additional documents for registering your mobile number.



I wish to know if my Aadhar card update request has been accepted or not. How can this happen?

The only way of knowing whether you update request has been processed or not, that is by waiting for an SMS that will confirm that your update request has been processed successfully.

However, if you feel a reasonable amount of time has passed and yet you fail to receive a confirmation, you can check the update status from the following link:

All you need to do is provide the details which need to be updated.



Is it necessary for me to submit an update request in the local language?

If you are opting for a demographic upgrade thought the online SSUP portal, the update data has to provided in English as well as the local language in which the Aadhar card is generated.

However, if you are opting for update through postal mode, then the update data in the correction form also, has to be provided in both languages – English as well as the local language used in the Aadhar card.



I entered the wrong demographic details at the time of online update, what can I do now?

It is suggested that the data must be cross checked each time you enter the Aadhar details. However, if you have wrongly entered the demographics, you need to make an update request for the same.

When Do I get the updated Aadhar letter?

You will receive the Updated Aadhar letter in case you have applied for update of Name, Address, Date of Birth or Gender change. For a change/update in mobile number or email – no new Aadhar letter shall be issued, but your records will be updated.

What can be done in case I do not receive my updated Aadhar letter?

The updated Aadhar letter takes time to reach your doorstep. Hence, you are advised to download e- Aadhar while you wait for the updated Aadhar letter to arrive at your place. It is very easy to download the electronic Aadhar card since the online portal has been made available.

Simply visit https://eAadhar.uidai.gov.in/ which will enable you to download eAadhar by providing your respective EID/UID. You can do so by following the steps here.



I wish to get the address of my child updated in Aadhar, how can I do this?

If you wish to get the address of your child updated, you can easily do so by visiting the nearest enrollment centre with your child.

However, you must remember that the parent whose Aadhar has been linked to the child must be present there for the process to be completed.

So, if you have your Aadhar linked with your child, visit the centre with him/her. There are a number of supporting documents that have to be provided. These include:

the parent’s proof of relationship
parent’s proof of address
However if the Aadhar of the parent is linked to the child’s – you simply need to carry the Aadhar with you.
the biometric authentication will be done of the linked parent.

I wish to get my email and mobile number updated. How can I do so?

In case you have the mobile number already registered with the Aadhar, you can update your email and mobile by the help of the online SSUP portal. Simply visit the page – https://ssup.uidai.gov.in/web/guest/update

Simply enter the Aadhar number and the Text you see in the image, and generate the OTP.

The documents that are to be submitted will depend upon the field that has to be updated via post. Following are the documents needed for different fields, have a look at them closely.

I want to submit an Aadhar update request through the online portal, is it mandatory to provide Mobile number details while submitting the request?

Whether you wish to submit the Aadhar card update request through post or online SSUP portal, it is mandatory to provide the mobile number details.

This is because the mobile number that you provide might be used for verification purposes as wel as for all future notifications and update processes. In fact having a mobile number linked to your Aadhar can help you get a duplicate aadhar in the form of eAadhar, update any details in Aadhar very quickly.

The application status will also be intimated to you via SMS on this number.



Can affidavit be accepted as a proof of identity?

Will a certificate from local MP/MLA/local body official accepted as a proof document?

Yes, Certificate of Address having photo issued by MP or MLA or a Gazetted Officer or even a Tehsildar on letterhead is an acceptable as a Proof.



My update request was rejected, what could have been the reason?

Generally, the update requests can be rejected due to one of the following reasons;

Wrong proof of identity/ proof of address document uploaded
Proof of identity/ proof of address document not self-attested
Transliteration error
Supporting documents not self-attested by the resident
Document uploaded through online SSUP portal are not found to be scanned copies of original documents (ensure usage of a good quality document scanner)
Mobile number or Aadhar number shared in the form is incorrect
Supporting documents are not in the name of the resident
You can contact the UIDAI helpline for more details at 1947 with your enrolment ID or Aadhar number.


Is it compulsory to provide C/o Details in Address?

The answer is No, it is not mandatory to provide c/o details with the address. This is because the C/o details in address are used for letter delivery purposes and therefore is a part of address – but it is not compulsory to fill.



What shall I do in case of my Aadhar being suspended and asked to update?

In case an Aadhar card is suspended, the update mode which has to be taken is through visiting the enrollment centre physically.

You will have to do the required update as might have been intimated to you in the communication sent by the Unique Identification Authority of India.
