According to a recent directive by the Supreme Court, the details of identity of every mobile user needs to be linked to Aadhar within a year’s time. SC has asked centre to ensure Aadhar link to mobile number, a step which will further help in preventing frauds and impersonations, especially at the time of getting new mobile connections. Read more on this recent development below.
The apex court said that there are over 100 crore mobile subscribers and the linking of all mobile subscribers to Aadhaar should be done within one year. And this includes those who have pre-paid SIM cards too.
THE REASON BEHIND THE AADHAR LINK TO MOBILE NUMBER
The Supreme Court’s order came after a public interest litigation (PIL) expressed concerns over the non-existence of a mechanism to identify the owner of a SIM card in case it was misused by someone.
The Supreme Court in its order, made it mandatory for all mobile subscribers to link their SIM cards to Aadhaar cards. The court also directed the Centre to device a way so that each person with a pre-paid sim would have to fill and deposit a form – this should be done once, whenever he or she recharges.
WHAT THE SUPREME COURT SAID REGARDING THE AADHAR CARD MOBILE NUMBER LINKING
As per ANI report, the Supreme Court heard the plea filed by Lok Niti foundation which sought the court’s intervention to have a streamlined process to stop the unauthorized use of SIM cards in mobile phones.
The PIL said that there was a grave risk to the national security, mostly because of lack of verification of mobile phone subscribers.
Accordingly, the SC has directed the centre to device and put in place a mechanism which will ensure proper verification of all mobile phone subscribers while issuing SIM cards. This would include the verification of the details, including the identity and address of all mobile subscribers within a year.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CLUBBING CELL PHONE NUMBERS TO AADHAR:
All the mobile operators should re-verify all mobile subscribers (prepaid and postpaid) via Aadhaar based E-KYC process.
For verification purpose, the operators will send a verification code to the mobile number of the subscriber.
The telecom operators will also need to verify if the customer is using more than one number and ensure all numbers are verified and linked to the same Aadhar.
This sounds to be good move in the direction of making mobile connections secure and preventing the misuse of new mobile connections, especially the pre-paid cards which are very easy to use and do away with.

“An effective mechanism would be put in place and the process would be completed in a year,”……said attorney general Mukul Rohatgi, on behalf of the Centre. Linking Aadhar card to Mobile numbers solves this and also serves as a much easier and effective verification system.
