Earlier this year the Supreme Court passed a judgment saying Aadhar Card cannot be mandatory for availing any benefits which are otherwise due to a citizen.
This new judgment passed by the Supreme Court has raised several questions and created confusions on whether the ‘Aadhar Card Compulsory’ situation is valid or not. One of such queries is whether Aadhar card is compulsory for Central pensioners. This article will clear all your doubts and tell you exactly why or why not Aadhar Card Compulsory for Central Pensioners.
AADHAR CARD COMPULSORY FOR CENTRAL PENSIONERS
The answer is YES, The Central Government has made Aadhar Card Compulsory for all central government pensioners. The Supreme Court has also allowed the use of Aadhar for availing the benefit of social welfare schemes like Pension schemes etc. and accordingly, a massive program has been launched by the Government to encourage the pensioners to seed their bank accounts with Aadhar Card number.
A MASSIVE PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT TO ENCOURAGE PENSIONERS
All the Central Pensioners started receiving calls or a postcard from the Bank Managers in which they have their account encouraging them to voluntarily seed their Aadhar number and explaining to them why Aadhar Card Compulsory seeding would be beneficial to them. Not only the Bank Managers but also the District Collectors have been brought in by the Union Ministry to help them on this program. The union ministry had an exclusive video conference with 200 collectors and asked them to convene a meeting with Bank Managers after which the Bank Mangers started calling the Central Pensioners to do the needful voluntarily.
WHAT WILL BE THE BENEFIT OF THIS SEEDING TO CENTRAL PENSIONERS?
The only people who stand to benefit from making Aadhar Card Compulsory, are the pensioners because once the seeding is done, the pensioner will have to submit a ‘Jeevan Praman’ Certificate annually to the bank to renew his pensions and this won’t require the pensioners to physically be present to get pension for the next year.
WHAT IS JEEVAN PRAMAN CERTIFICATE?
Jeevan Praman Certificate or commonly known as the Digital life Certificate was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2014. The aim of this project was to rule out the old practice where pensioners have to be physically present to get the pension and present a physical life certificate every November so that their pension can be continued for the next year as well.
Since pensioners are elderly people it is often difficult and sometimes impossible for them to be physically present at the bank to present a physical life certificate.
Under the Jeevan Praman Certificate, the agency will access the information of the pensioner through the Aadhar Card number and s/he will not have to be physically present.
“Jeevan Praman or a digital life certificate is also a service for pensioners on the basis of Aadhar but we are keeping it voluntary so far. It’s in benefit of the aged pensioners to have the facility to avoid trips to banks,” a senior official of Ministry of Personnel said.
Therefore, it stays that Aadhar Card Compulsory for Central Pensioner and all the Central Pensioners have to seed their Aadhar Card number with their bank account number.
