Aadhar Card provides an avenue for the Officials to check and verify the identity of the holder, on a digital platform and, that too in a matter of seconds.
Amidst the on-going tussle between the Government and the Supreme Judiciary of India, over the matter of making Aadhar Card mandatory for availing all the Government sponsored services and benefits, the ID still remains as one of the most of important documents for the Indian Residents. The question is, who all are eligible for this ID Card? For now, all Indian Residents including Indian nationals and Foreigners with valid visas are eligible to apply for it.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET AN AADHAR CARD FOR NRIS?
SIMPLY PUT, CAN AN NRI APPLY FOR AADHAR CARD IN INDIA?
As of today, an Aadhar Card for NRI is not possible. An NRI actually cannot apply for an Aadhar Card. However, if the intentions of the Planning Ministry of India are to be believed then, soon even Non-resident Indians (NRIs) would also be able to apply for the novel idea of a Universal Identity Card called Aadhar. Let us see the possibilities of availability of Aadhar Card for NRIs.
The Planning Minister, in his reply to the Lok Sabha, mentioned that there is a possibility of extending the eligibility of Aadhar Card to NRIs, POIs (Person of Indian Origin) and OICs (Overseas Citizenship of India). In fact, the UIDAI is working on just the right policy that would allow NRIs to apply for the Unique ID, which is also available online as an E-Aadhar Card.
Such an extension would certainly prove to be a boon for the Non-Resident Indians, who would now be able to participate more actively in their native Democracy. It would lead to a better accounting of the people belonging to India.
SO, WHEN WOULD THE NRI APPLICATION FOR AADHAR CARD START?
In his written reply to the Lok Sabha, Planning Minister Inderjit Singh, clearly mentioned that no specific timeframe has been allotted for the commencement and extension of Aadhar Card registration to the NRIs and POI/OICs. At he same time, he made it clear that the work has already started and Ministry along with the UIDAI (Universal Identification Authority of India) would ensure that all steps are taken to implement the idea of an Aadhar Card for NRIs
Hence, soon the question: ‘How to apply for an Aadhar Card for NRI’ would be answered in affirmative, provided that the Ministry commits to the idea and ensures that the system of Aadhar Card NRI application is launched without any loopholes and drawbacks.
WHAT WOULD BE THE BENEFITS OF AN AADHAR CARD FOR NRI?
Aadhar Card, apart for from being a Universal Biometric Identity Card, also acts as an important avenue for the Government to disburse Direct Benefit Transfers. Also, this card helps the Government Pension/Scholorship schemes, Telecom Operators, Banks, LPG Suppliers for subsidy transfers, etc. to identify their customers or recipients. Hence, when an NRI would also be able to apply for an Aadhar Card, it would not only help his/her family which may still be living in India, but would also help the Aadhar Card holder himself / herself to experience a smoother infrastructure to complete several government-work related formalities that may sometimes take a complicated turn in the absence of an Identity Card like Aadhar. Therefore, as and when NRI apply for Aadhar Card comes into practice, it would definitely help strengthen the ties of the Nation to its own Citizens living abroad.
We will definitely keep all our readers posted on any development in this regards.
