Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu informed the Lok Sabha that “Aadhaar has not been made mandatory for senior citizens to avail concessions in train tickets”.
He, however, added that – Railways has initiated a process to create a database of senior citizens based on Aadhaar details on a voluntary basis to prevent misuse of the facility.
Adding to the list of many benefits and instances requiring the Aadhar, there is yet another news making the headlines. Aadhar will now soon be compulsory in order to get train tickets booked online.

This step, according to the authorities, is to prevent touts from blocking a bulk of tickets, which makes it difficult for genuine people to get reservation of their tickets, sometimes even just minutes after the bookings open. Furthermore, there have been number of fraudulent bookings and cases of impersonation in the past years.
To prevent all this from happening, the Railways will soon move towards an Aadhar-based online ticketing system.
This will be done in a phased manner and the following initiative are being planned:
In addition to this, a senior Railway Ministry Official said,
“Aadhaar number will be required for one-time registration at the IRCTC ticketing site. The step is aimed at eliminating touts from registering with fake identities,” he further added that the Railways is preparing a software for this purpose.
In spite of a number of steps taken by the Railway Ministry, touts cornering a bulk of tickets and then selling these tickets at a much higher price later on, is becoming a serious issue for the railways. It is expected that by going cashless, this issue will be resolved to a greater extent.

- Apart from this, there was a plan in place already for making Aadhar compulsory for senior citizens to avail the senior citizen concessions. This will come into force from April 1, 2017 and a three-month trial run for this is going on as of now.

- In his new business plan for Railways for 2017-18, the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on 2nd March 2017, revealed that the railways will move towards a cashless ticketing system.
- This will be done by installing 6,000 point- of- scale machines and 1,000 automatic ticket vending machines across the country.
- Furthermore, by the month of May 2017, an integrated ticketing application will also be launched.
- The individuals booking tickets, will just have to give the Aadhar details once, and they will be linked to their profile for future transactions.
