Aadhar Linking with Skype : An Initiative to Ease Govt. Processes for the Common Man

As a result, the Aadhar scheme has become a huge success. To take this to a next level, the Government has collaborated with technology giant Microsoft, to pursue Aadhar Linking through Skype calls.

But why is Skype and Aadhar Linking needed? What is the use and most importantly, will it work? Let’s answer all those queries right here.

What is Skype – Aadhar Linking?

Global software firm Microsoft, has been working on a pilot to enable Aadhar Linking with Skype. Skype, as you might already by aware of, is a highly popular application that provides video chat and voice call services over the internet. Microsoft has began integrating the Skype service with its own products.

The project aims to link Skype with the Aadhar database and consider whether the Aadhar identification service can be used on video calls, to a Government institution.

  • Thus Aadhar Linking with Skype can be thought of as associating a person’s Aadhar number with their Skype account.
  • On the Skype’s end, user security can be guaranteed by the use of fingerprints – Something which the Aadhar Database already has or facial scanners.

However, details of the project’s pilot version are not yet disclosed.

Why is Skype – Aadhar Linking needed?

This revolutionary idea when implemented, will be highly appreciated as it eliminates the need for a person’s physical presence for a lot of Government verification and processes. According to Brad Smith, Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer –
“Skype would evolve in a way to enable a person at home to authenticate themselves using the Aadhar ID system with a fingerprint or iris scan. The person can then communicate with someone from the respective government agency. Thus, the task of user identification becomes easier for the government agencies as well.
Benefits of Skype – Aadhar Linking

The major benefit of Aadhar Linking with Skype is that people need not travel long distances for many government requirements. The kind of convenience it will bring into people’s lives is very significant.

Some Examples:

  • A person can testify in court proceedings through a Skype / Aadhar Authenticated video call.
  • Even in scenarios where certain verification needs personal interaction; the same can be replaced by a Skype Call.
  • Also, while you do need to give a driving test to get a license; but for a learning license you don’t have to waste your time visiting the RTO personally if such a authenticated, secure verification can be done

These and many other services will become straightforward once an individual’s Aadhar number is linked with their Skype account.

Although this futuristic approach to availing government services is effortless, questions have been raised about exposing such sensitive demographic data to a private party (Microsoft, in this case).

Smith has said that the company is working closely with the Indian government to set up a Cyber Security Engagement Centre (CSEC). The company’s CSEC in Gurgaon, brings together attorneys, investigators and security response experts from across the company to look after cyber threats in real-time. In addition to this, it offers security consulting to companies in areas like power plants and defence.

That said, citizens can be assured of their data security until further details of the Skype – Aadhar Linking projects are clearly known.
