AADHAR ENABLED TRANSACTIONS: WHAT’S THE MOVE ALL ABOUT?

This move is being driven by NITI Aayog and it is focused towards being an integral part of an all-round approach towards enabling digital payments. Government may also introduce more ease of cashless transactions and coming up with some disincentives towards cash transactions in the country.
“The Aadhaar-enabled transactions are card-less and pin-less. This would enable mobile android phones users to digitally transact using their Aadhaar number and fingerprint/iris authentication,”
– Ajay Pandey, director general of the UIDAI said.
The new system will enable Android mobile phones users to digitally transact using their unique identification number and fingerprint/iris authentication.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT PLANS TO DO FOR AADHAR ENABLED TRANSACTIONS?

First of all, the scheme would require a multi-pronged strategy, including talking to mobile manufacturers, merchants and banks. Hence, the government has already started working in different directions to help achieve this.
“We are asking mobile manufacturers to see if all mobiles made in India should be inbuilt with iris or thumb identification system to as to help Aadhaar-enabled transactions,”
– NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said.
The committee will lay out a road-map for implementation of digital payments over the next one year. The government is simultaneously creating a system of incentives/disincentives. Furthermore, such that cash transactions become more expensive and people are given enough incentives to pay digitally.

Meanwhile IT secretary Aruna Sundarajan said that the ministry has allocated roughly INR 100 crore facilitating the process of enrolling merchants on to the digital platform. It is another healthy push towards the drive.
“The ministry will undertake a major outreach communication campaign to ensure that every segment of population is enables to use one of other mode of digital payment.”
– IT secretary Aruna Sundarajan
Ajay Pandey, director general of the UIDAI told Economic Times that there will be card-less and PIN-less transactions very soon.

“This will enable Android mobile phone users to digitally transact using their Aadhaar number and fingerprint/iris authentication. There are currently 1.31 crore transactions per day through Aadhaar and we can handle up to 10 crore transactions per day. We will soon be able to manage 40 crore transactions each day.” he added.

Apart from Android phones, the government is also looking at offering similar services on feature and basic GSM phones, e-wallets, unified payments interfaces and card swipe machines.

With the Government being very serious about going cashless and minimising the possibilities of corruption from the system – hope more people come in support of the same.
