Aadhar Card Enrollment Crosses 1 Billion Mark!

This unique number can be used to speed up Government processes, avail the benefit of the various schemes of the government and can also serve as means for identification and verification purposes of a citizen.

Aadhar Card Enrollment Crosses 1 Billion Mark!

Aadhar Card Enrollment has reached the one billion mark and the government announced the same in a press conference held by Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr. Ravi Prasad.

This achievement makes Aadhar Card the biggest biometric database in the world, with:

  • 100 crores UIDAI allotted to persons in the country
  • almost 95% adult population,
  • 67% children between the age to 5-18
  • 20% between age 0-5 being already covered under UIDAI program.
Just a few days before we could get this Aadhar Card News, the Aadhar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016 was introduced in the parliament and has now been passed and gives Aadhar legislative support.

Government on The Aadhar Card Enrollment Milestone

On this development Mr. Ravi Prasad told the pres…
“Aadhar crossing the 100-crore mark is indeed a momentous occasion. This along with the recently notified Aadhar Act will give a boost to the government’s initiative of bringing a systematic change in the way services, subsidies and benefits will be directly delivered to the deserving masses”.
Mr. Ravi Prasad also told the press that Aadhar Card enrolls 5-7 lakhs people every day and this rapid pace of Aadhar Card enrollment has help Aadhar Card become the largest digital identity platform of the world.

All about the 1 Billion Target

It was earlier reported that the central government had set 31st March as the target to complete 1 Billion Aadhar Card enrollment but the target was missed by a narrow margin of a day or two, the possible reasons being a long weekend owing to Holi.

History of Aadhar Card Enrollment

The objective of an Aadhar Card is to collect demographic and biometric data of the resident citizens, store them in a centralized database and based on that provide the individuals with a unique 12-digit number which is the Aadhar Card.

The UIDAI was established on 28th January 2009 after a notification issued by the Planning Commission Of India.

Nandan Nilekani, the co-founder Infosys, was appointed by the UPA to head the project for the Central government.   Since 2009, when Aadhar card enrollment started there was much debate about the validity and use of Aadhar.  However, citizens who applied for the Aadhar reaped its benefits right from the beginning because Aadhar was widely accepted as substantial means of identification and verification by various institutions like schools, banks etc.

During the budget presentation on 3rd March 2016, Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley introduced The Aadhar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2016. The bill was passed in the Parliament on 11th March 2016 which laid to rest more than half a decade long debate on whether Aadhar  has legislative support or not.
