Aadhar is a 12 Digit Unique identification number issued in India after due scrutiny of data and scanning of individuals. Aadhar is unique and very important number and issued only once in a lifetime to citizens of India. It is not a proof of citizenship but a very effective proof of identity and address to avail various facilities and schemes like Direct Benefit Transfer of Government Subsidies like  in Domestic Gas, Ration, etc. or for passport applications, opening of bank account or other day to day needs anywhere in India.

One fundamental thing that people often misunderstand about the Aadhar Card is that it’s not a document of proof (though in generic terminology or day-today usage you can say so) but the Aadhar number is actually a document of proof. To put it in simpler terms, let me give you an example – let’s say if your Voter ID Card or Driving license is lost, your document of proof is lost – that is, if at some place you are being asked to submit a copy of your Voter ID Card or Driving License, you cannot just quote your Voter ID Card number or Driving License number. You actually need the original document with you or a copy of it. However, when we talk of Aadhar Card, no matter even if you lose the Aadhar Card that was sent to you by the UIDAI, you can download a new copy of it from UIDAI website because you are identified by your number and not the Aadhar Card document in physical form. Countries like USA have this sort of number since several decades. They call it as Social Security Number (SSN).
